CHAMBER HOLDS SPRING MEMBERSHIP DINNER

Chamber Director Sue Galbraith presenting the Distinguished Citizen Award to Michele and Keith Hoffman
Members and guests of the Alden Chamber of Commerce enjoyed dinner and an evening together at the Whistle Stop Inn on Tuesday, May 18, for the Chamber’s Annual Spring Membership and Election Dinner.  Among the guests were family and friends of Keith and Michele Hoffman, recipients of the 2010 Distinguished Citizen of the Year award.  A beautiful plaque, from Laser Ace Custom Engraving, was presented to Keith and Michele by Chamber Director Sue Galbraith.

After a delicious dinner and the award presentation, during which Michele and Keith gave heartfelt thank yous to the Chamber for the honor and to everyone who made the evening possible, the crowd attentively listened to Alden Village Mayor Richard Kegler, as he spoke on the possible effects to the Village and Towns of Alden if a vote on dissolution of the Village was forced by a petition.  While such a petition has not been filed, the Village anticipates receiving such a petition in the future.  The Mayor outlined some of the difficulties that the Village would face, based on how the State’s new dissolution law is written.  The Mayor also discussed details of some of the effects on taxpayers if the Village is dissolved into the Town.  However, some of those details are based on a study performed during the late 1990’s.  The Mayor also took a few questions from the audience.  It was suggested that only when a new study is performed by an outside firm, will a more accurate idea on the effects be known.

Chamber Director Steven Weber presenting outgoing President Nancy Hughes with the President's Award
Next, Chamber President Nancy Hughes spoke of the Chamber’s accomplishments during the past year and outlined current and future activities.  Chamber Director Steve Weber then presented Nancy with a gift of appreciation for her two years of service as Chamber president.   After Nancy thanked the retiring directors for their service to the Chamber over the past three years, Steve Weber introduced the nominees for a new three year term on the Chamber Board.  They are John Drogi (Drogi & Sons Automotive), Dr. Lynn Fusco (Alden Central School Superintendant), Paul Henry (Henry’s Candy & Gifts), Paul Hutschenreuter (Zoladz Construction), and Raymond Stoos.  The vote in favor was unanimous and the dinner drew to a close.

The Chamber met May 20 for its monthly Board of Directors meeting and elected new officers for 2010-11.  Steve Weber was elected Chamber President and John Drogi, from Drogi & Sons Automotive, will serve as Vice President.  Noll Ferris, from Doritex Corporation, will remain as Treasurer.  Directors for 2010-11 are Brooks Bowman (Elwood-Jordans Agency), Christopher Dundon (MaGavin’s Restaurant & Pub), Nancy Webster Hughes, Jennifer Strong (Neill & Strong, Attorneys), and Steve Weber.   Directors for 2010-12 are J. Michael Druding (Greatbatch Medical), Noll Ferris (Doritex Corporation), Sue Galbraith (Alden Advertiser), Earl Gillen (Gillen’s Expert Auto), and Thomas Steffan (Cooke & Steffan, Attorneys).  The Chamber extends a big thank you to retiring Directors William Dabb (Laser Ace Custom Engraving) and Myrna Foss (James N. Foss Inc.).  For information on the Alden Chamber of Commerce and its activities, see their web site at www.aldenny.org.  If you are on Facebook, see the Chamber’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/aldenchamber.
