CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK 2011

Spring-like temperatures helped bring out many friends and family to enjoy an event-filled afternoon on Saturday, December 3rd at Alden's 18th “Christmas in the Park”.  During the afternoon, ACTS carolers sang while strolling the streets in Victorian dress and there was a living nativity performed by ACTS at the Beacon Café.  Horse drawn wagon rides traveled around the Alden Town Park and kids enjoyed pony rides and a petting zoo. The Alden Kiwanis provided kettle corn and pictures of little ones sharing their toy lists with Santa. To help keep warm, at Firemen’s Park, the Alden Lions Club provided hot cocoa with cookies donated by Tops and St. Aidan’s Church had free chili. Kids had their picture taken with “Wiener Dude”, Wardynski’s mascot. And at the Legion Hall, there was a Holiday Marketplace where you could buy many Christmas needs.

The Alden Historical Society was open for visiting and children’s Christmas stories were read at the Ewell Free Library.  Many Alden businesses offered special discounts and free refreshments. The Alden Town Recreation Department had children’s crafts.

Eight trees were beautifully decorated by area organizations and were announced and lit one by one while singers from the Alden Ecumenical Choir, accompanied by local singer Sara Elizabeth Genco, sang Christmas Carols. Winners of the tree decorating contest were as follows: 1st place judges’ vote was Alden High School Spanish Club; 1st place popular vote was Alden High School Youth Against Cancer; 2nd place judges’ vote was Alden High School Youth Against Cancer and popular votewas Crittenden Presbyterian Youth Group; 3rd place judges’ vote was a tie between Alden Girl Scouts and St. John’s Christian Youth Organization and 3rd place popular vote went to Cub Scout Pack 160. Consolation prizes were awarded to Cub Scout Pack 117 and Hearts & Hands, Faith in Action. The tree judges were Erie County Legislator-Elect, Terry McCracken , local artist Conrad Borucki and Paul Raechal, Manager of Tractor Supply, Alden.  Trees were generously donated by Ulbrich’s Garden Center, Adams Nursery, and D &T Lawn Care.
